Starling Paddy

Born in South Africa in 1940, Paddy moved to Zimbabwe in 1961 where he farmed sugarcane in the then Rhodesian lowveldt.

In 1970, encouraged by friends, he started painting landscapes in oil. A year later, he held his first one-man exhibition in Harare under a scheme to promote aspiring artists. The exhibition was sold out on the opening night.

In 1973, Paddy and his family returned to South Africa, finally settling down in picturesque Simon’s Town. For the next twenty years, Paddy lived and painted in Cape Town, never far from the sea. The popularity and the critical appeal of his work can be measured by the huge success of his one-man exhibitions. Paddy has held no less than thirty successful solo exhibitions throughout South Africa. As well as executing large numbers of commissions, he is also represented in more than 22 galleries around the country.

Paddy’s commissions range from the past State President of South Africa, to national and international corporate clients, various prestigious hotel groups, including local and international private collectors.

Influenced by his brother, Paddy became very interested in trout and fly-fishing. It proved to be a perfect marriage, combining his love for landscape and his unique ability to capture water on canvas. It is a subject Paddy revels in and one that he still continues to explore today.
