A painter of landscapes, using large brushstrokes. Worked in oil and watercolour. A number of sculptures in cement, wonderstone and wood.

Profile:   A member of the Bloemfontein Group, with whom he exhibited. For 17 years travelled extensively, by caravan, in SA and Zimbabwe with his wife, Iris Ampenberger. The Municipal Art Museum in Tweespruit, opened in 1982, was named after Frans Claerhout and Stefan and Iris Ampenberger.

Exhibitions:   Participated in numerous group exhibitions with the Orange Free State Art Society and throughout SA; held joint exhibitions with his wife; 1926 first of several solo exhibitions; 1964 Quadrennial Exhibition; 1965 Kimberley, Kroonstad and Thaba Nchu,joint exhibition with Iris Ampenberger and Frans Claerhout; 1968 Bloemfontein Technical College, Retrospective Exhibition; 1970 and 1973 William Humphreys Art Gallery, Kimberley, joint exhibitions with his wife; 1978 National Museum, Bloemfontein, Retrospective Exhibition.
