Herbert Herold Coetzee

Born 1921 Cape Town. A painter of landscapes, seascapes, portraits, figures and still life. Works in oil, acrylic, gouache, ink and charcoal. Studies  - c.1949 six months part time at the Continetal School of Art, Cape Town, under Maurice van Essche (qv); 1958-60 Koninklijke Academie voor Schone Kunsten en de Hogere Instituten, Antwerp, Belgium, under Professor Julien Creytens (b. 1897), Professor Jan Vaerten (1909-80) and Professor F van der Spiet, on a study bursary.Profile 1951-54 a member of the Executive Committee of the SA Society of Artists. 1968-81 lectured at the Cape Technical College. 1975-76 a judge for school and art society exhibitions. A trained singer. Has travelled extensively in Europe in 1959, 1973 and 1985. Exhibitions - He has participated in numerous group exhibitions from 1952 in SA and once in Antwerp; 1956 SAAA Gallery, Cape Town, first of 12 solo exhibitions held in SA, 1956 Quadrennial Exhibition, 1981 Republic Festival Exhibition. Represented - Ann Bryant Gallery, East London, Hester Rupert Art Museum, Graaff-Reinet, Pretoria Art Museum, Rand Afrikaans University, University of Cape Town, University of the Orange Free State, University of the Witwatersrand. Public Commissions - From 1956 several landscape commissions for military and commercial offices, many portrait commissions, including 1981-85 seven portraits of Officials of the University of the Orange Free State.
