A painter of landscapes, generally incorporating trees, and of portraits. Worked in oil and gouache. A cartoonist.

 Studies: 1889 Buckhurst Hill Art School, England; 1890-95 Walthamstow School of Art, London,gaining an Art Teachers Certificate; 1896 National Art Training School,London; 1897-99 Royal College of Art, London, where he was awarded a British Institute Scholarship.

Profile:  A member of the London Sketch Club and the Johannesburg sketch Club. 1924 elected a Fellow of the Cape Town Society of Artists; 1925 Vice-President of the Orange Free State Society of Arts and Crafts. 1927 began teaching at the Witwatersrand Technical College. Illustrated, in a similar style to that of Arthur Rackham, editions of works by authors such as Charles Dickens, Jane Austen and Charlotte Bronte. In SA illustrated books by Dorothea Fairbridge, including the well-known Skiddle. Travelled extensively in SA. Son of the artist Richard Carter.

Exhibitions:  Participated in several group exhibitions from 1894 in London, Paris and SA; held numerous solo exhibitions throughout SA; 1949 Gainsborough Gallery,Johannesburg,Commemorative Exhibition; 1974 Pretoria Art Museum, Commemorative Exhibition.

Awards:  1890 Bronze Medal for Drawing from the Antique; 1898 the Gilbert Garrett Prize for Landscape.

Represented:  Africana Museum,Johannesburg; Albany Museum,Grahamstown; Ann Bryant Gallery,East London; Durban Art Gallery; Johannesburg Art Gallery; National Museum,Bloemfontein; Pretoria Art Museum; SA National Gallery, Cape Town; University of Pretoria; William Humphreys Art Gallery,Kimberley.

Public Commissions:  1936 five landscape murals in Jeppe Street Post Office,Johannesburg. 1938 two murals in Cape Town Post Office.

Publications by Carter:  Wrote and illustrated The Wonderful Adventures of Mr Fox, Pinkie and Pearl, Mr and Mrs Elephant’s Golden Wedding and The Walrus and The Jabaru.
